Instagram post ratios evolved from 1:1 to 4:5 after a grid change forced designers to adapt and it was a clear upgrade. Now, the next step is 3:4: slightly taller, more space, better visual impact, and fully supported by Instagram. It's time to make the switch.
There used to be a time where we all used 1:1 ratios on our designs, perfectly square remember that? until Instagram decided to change the grid. so our posts weren't displayed on the profile as we expected; there was a lot of cropping, and it felt off. So with time, people came to realize we needed to change the ratios, and so I did. I changed to 4:5, and all other clubs did too. Some still use 1:1, but the majority did shift to 4:5 and let's be honest, 4:5 is way better. easier on the eye, you have more space, so that change was for a good reason.
Did our designs improve?
Yes.
Did the feed look better?
Also yes.
So what’s the point of this?
And What’s going to change again?
Well, the ratio that I found to be interesting and is supported by Instagram that most people don't use, is 3:4.
Now let me show you physically the differences between all three ratios.

As you can see, big difference between 1:1 and 4:5, but not that big of a difference between 3:4 and 4:5 — 3:4 is slightly longer.
Now here is my take on this: I'm going to change to 3:4. Why though? As we concluded from the last change, more space = better. Same here you have more space to express yourself in, and it looks better because it's more like a poster. It's way more appealing, and size does matter; you do want all the space you can have and use it visually.
In conclusion, in my opinion, we should use the 3:4 ratio from now on Instagram so this is a callout to all designers and other clubs to start using it. And of course, that doesn't mean that 4:5 ratio is bad. You do you at the end of the day it's what's in the post that matters.
